In 2017, Grand Seiko identified a certain issue with its timepieces: namely, they looked boring. Sure, the Spring Drive is mechanically advanced. It's certainly difficult to marry the best aspects of a quartz movement with the craftsmanship of a mechanical watch, but if you were John Q. Watch Enthusiast out there, if you didn't eat and breathe the Grand Seiko folklore, there was something missing from the brand.

In 2018, Grand Seiko set out to do something about it. With the release of the Snowflake, then the Peacock, and now this SBGA387G, Grand Seiko has truly hit its stride with more exciting colors and textured dials - even on its more dressy offerings. Even though this particular watch doesn't have a flashy nickname like its Snowflake & Peacock bretheren, it has all the makings of a Japanese Haute Horology classic. For this year, it joins the aforementioned models in the newly-christened Grand Seiko Heritage Collection. So we're pretty sure that GS is aware that they've created an instant classic.

So, we'll just call it the SBGA387G "Glacier" from here on out. We'll see if that sticks - it probably won't. Anyway, at 40mm, the Glacier is a spectacular wear, very similar to the Snowflake in dimensions and wrist presence.

While the name hasn't quite stuck, the model's presence certainly has, because its dial has come back with a vengeance in 2019's SBGA407 Glacier II. Even if we don't have the 387, we will have the 407 or can find one of you.

Only this time, the blue is just a bit more eye-catching. If you're new to Grand Seiko models, this is a great entry to the model lineup. Like all other Spring Drive watches, the SBGA387G Glacier ships complete with a Power Reserve complication - one of the most underrated complications in fine watches.
