One of the most advanced timepiece movements on the planet, Grand Seiko's Spring Drive marries the precision of a quartz movement with the craftsmanship of an automatic movement. Beyond that, it also manages to truly achieve the sweeping hand motion that so many automatic movements seek.

The original Spring Drive was the brainchild of Yoshikazu Akahane after five years of prototype work in 1982. His invention uses a mainspring, a barrel to store energy, just like a traditional mechanical watch. What makes the Spring Drive interesting is its use of electrical energy to guide the glide wheel to power the control circuit and quartz crystal oscillator, functioning as a sort of bicycle brake, of sorts, on the main spring to slow the main spring down to create a perfectly smooth motion for the second hand.

It was an incredible invention that would have changed the watch market in the 1980s during the height of the quartz crisis.

However, Grand Seiko wanted to be sure that Akahane's amazing invention had a 48-hour life span. Thanks to this requirement, it took another 17 years of work by Seiko engineers before the first Spring Drive timepiece was rolled out in 1999 after a total of more than 600 prototypes. Now, you can enjoy the fruits of Akahane's and all of those engineers' labors at Burdeen's Jewelry. Call us or come in to see the entire line.
